About
Carcassonne
A short introduction
La Cité Médiévale
The medieval castle in Carcassonne is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is an incredible place to visit year round. The castle is perched on a hill above the River Aude. It boasts 52 towers within 2 concentric walls 3km long. It is FREE to visit.
The castle dominates the whole city and is packed with restaurants, shops, museums and hotels along charming streets and alley ways. You truly feel as if you have gone back in time when you wander through it’s streets.
A city of two parts
The History starts over 2000 years ago when the Romans fortified the hilltop
The Highlights
Most impressive
The famous castle
The view of the amazing walled castle of La Cite catches your breath as you cross the Pont Vieux and make your way up to the main gate, “Porte Narbonnaise”. You wander along Rue Trivalle and up a gentle hill to the entrance to the castled city.
Restaurants
Highly rated restaurants
Our list of favourites numbers over 20, it is impossible to keep the list small as so many restaurants are wonderful in both the Bastide and the Cite.
Wines
Languedoc White, Rose and Red
Carcassonne is located in the Languedoc, the largest wine producing region in France. It is also, in our opinion, the best. Try wine tasting in the city or a vineyard! You won’t be disappointed.
Scenery
Mountains, Rivers, Canals
Wherever you drive the scenery will impress you. Cross canal locks on the canal du midi, drive through the hills and mountains, vineyards on all sides and in summer you do this under the most glorious mediterranean skies.
Things to do
Festivals and Events year round
There are free concerts in the summer, free festivals in almost every village and you can enjoy Truffle season events, Asparagus season and the Vendage (harvesting of the grapes) at the end of the Summer.
